Number 1

What is Scalp MicroPigmentation (SMP)?

Scalp Micropigmentation (SMP) is a non-invasive cosmetic procedure that involves applying tiny, layered dots in different hues of black to replicate the look of a shadow on your scalp. This process creates the illusion of fuller hair and can help those experiencing hair loss, thinning hair, or scarring on the scalp.

Number 2

Who is a good candidate for SMP?

Almost anyone over the age of 18 experiencing hair loss, thinning hair, or scalp scarring can benefit from SMP. It is suitable for all ages above 18, skin types, and stages of hair loss. Whether you have a receding hairline, alopecia, or just want to add density to thinning areas, SMP can provide a natural-looking solution.

Number 3

Who is not a good candidate for SMP?

Whilst scalp micropigmentation is generally considered safe for most people, there are certain conditions and situations where a person may not be a suitable candidate for the procedure. Some examples include:

  • Active Psoriasis, Eczema, Keratosis Pilaris, and Dermatitis on your scalp can lead to poor healing and make it difficult for pigment to hold.

  • Scalp infections (e.g., fungal, bacterial) must be resolved before undergoing SMP.

  • Allergies to tattoo ink or pigments.

  • Lupus or Scleroderma: Autoimmune conditions that affect skin healing may complicate recovery after SMP.

  • Keloid Scarring: If you have a history of keloid scarring, you may be at risk of developing these scars after the SMP procedure.

  • Haemophilia: People with bleeding disorders, such as haemophilia, may be at increased risk of excessive bleeding during or after the procedure.

  • People who have recently had hair transplants or other scalp surgeries should wait until they are fully healed before undergoing SMP.

  • Chronic acne on the scalp can spread infection and risk pigment not holding.

  • Pregnant or breastfeeding women are not eligible for scalp micropigmentation.

Please note: This is not an exhaustive list. We will discuss your suitability for SMP and any questions you may have during your initial consultation.

Number 4

How long does the SMP procedure take?

The duration of the SMP procedure varies depending on the extent of the treatment area. Typically, it takes 3 sessions, each lasting around 2-3 hours, and scheduled about a week apart. There will also be a final 4th session about 4 weeks after your third session where we can assess your SMP treatment after it has fully healed, and make any final adjustments. We will provide a personalised treatment plan based on your specific needs during your free consultation.

Number 5

Is SMP painful?

Most clients describe the sensation as uncomfortable rather than painful. The procedure involves using micro-needles. Pain tolerance varies, but many clients find the process tolerable. Pain relief options will be discussed during your free consultation.

Number 6

How long does SMP last?

SMP is a long-lasting solution, typically maintaining its appearance for 4-6 years. Over time, the pigments may fade slightly, at which point a touch-up session can refresh the look. Proper aftercare and sun protection can help prolong the results. See our 'After Care' page for further information on how to care for your SMP treatment.

Number 7

What is the aftercare for SMP?

Aftercare is crucial to ensure the best results. For the first few days, avoid heavy sweating, direct sun exposure, and submerging the treated area. See our 'After Care' page for further information on how to care for your SMP treatment.

Number 8

Can SMP be removed or altered?

Yes, SMP can be adjusted or removed if desired. Adjustments can be made during follow-up sessions to refine the look, and laser removal options are available if you decide to remove the pigmentation entirely.

Number 9

Are there any risks or side effects?

SMP is generally safe when performed by a qualified practitioner. Common side effects include mild redness and swelling, which typically subside within a few days. Serious complications are rare, but it is essential to follow all after care instructions to minimise risks.

Number 10

How much does SMP cost?

The cost of SMP varies depending on the extent of the treatment area and the number of sessions required. Our prices range from $500 to $6,000. Book in a free consultation for personalised pricing.
